Enrollment. State Fire Training does not own the facilities or operate the actual delivery of courses or academies, therefore, enrollment into an Accredited Academy is managed individually by each independent academy.

While most programs want all students to enter at the same time, some have staggered entrance options. Generally, you'll need to commit anywhere from 40 to 48 hours weekly to undergo the program.

Starting Fall of 2022, to be considered "fully trained", Category 1 Candidates will have successfully completed a Firefighter 1 Accredited Fire Academy with the completion of the State "Firefighter 1A: Structure, Firefighter 1B: Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations and Firefighter 1C: Wildland certifications.

Time to complete this education training ranges from 3 hours to 3 months depending on the qualification, with a median time to complete of 8 hours. The cost to attend CAL FIRE Academy is $150.
