​The Nonpublic School Approval Branch is responsible for the regulatory oversight of nonpublic schools located throughout Maryland. These schools fall into three distinct categories; nonpublic schools approved under COMAR 13A. 09.09 (private pay), nonpublic schools approved under COMAR 13A.

The Nonpublic Textbook Program provides secular textbooks and computer hardware and software for loan to participating nonpublic schools and provides additional funding to nonpublic schools in which a portion of the student enrollment qualifies for free or reduced-price meals.

Private schools receive no funding from government, so they have to get money from other sources. The primary source of funding for private schools is through tuition. Tuition is per student annually and varies extensively depending on the type of school and the quality of education.

You can start and own a private school if you obtain and file the proper nonprofit or for-profit articles of incorporation with your state. Doing so is a simple business transaction.

Maryland has no accreditation requirements. Schools operated by a religious organization need only to register with the state -- they are exempt from approval requirements. Otherwise, schools must receive approval from the state, based on condition of facilities, curriculum and admissions requirements.
