Completed and signed Application for Michigan Watercraft Title (Form WR-11L). Current registration or, if the registration is missing, a bill of sale. The original title assigned to the new owner, unless no title exists. Payment for the titling and registration fees.

Boat registration All watercraft, unless exempt, must be registered with the Michigan Department of State and display a registration decal.

Under certain circumstances, you can sell your titled watercraft without replacing a lost title if: The seller and buyer appear together at a Secretary of State branch office with proof of the hull identification number (HIN)

If the watercraft is not titled, you will need to complete the back of your watercraft registration and visit a Secretary of State office with the buyer to transfer ownership.

DOCUMENTED WATERCRAFT The U.S. Coast Guard Certification of Documentation (CG-1270) serves as proof of ownership. However, documented watercraft must obtain a Michigan watercraft registration at the regular fee. The registration (MC) number does not have to be displayed on the vessel.

Just simply draft up a bill of sale from the original owner and sign it (both of you) to transfer this to your name. If you don't have any documentation and the boat has never been registered, you can still bring in the Hull ID and whatever documentation you have about the boat (a photo, for instance) and register it.

If the deceased owner's estate is probated, the probated owner must visit a Secretary of State office and provide: The original vehicle title, signed by the executor or administrator of the deceased's estate. Letter of Authority from the executor or administrator of the deceased's estate.

In Michigan, you must have a Certificate of Number (registration) and validation decals to operate your vessel legally on public waters. The only exceptions are: Privately owned rowboats 16 feet or less in length. Privately owned non-motorized canoes or kayaks.
