A PFS is a document developed by manufacturers that provides specific information about how a product credits toward the USDA meal patterns for Child Nutrition Programs. Unlike CN labels, the information on PFS forms can vary among manufacturers because these forms are not reviewed, approved, or monitored by the USDA.

Product Formulation Statement means a signed certified document that provides a way for a manufacturer to demonstrate how a product may contribute to the meal pattern requirements of Child Nutrition (CN) programs. A PFS is typically provided for processed products that do not have a CN Label.

Grain items must be made from grains that are whole-grain flour, whole-grain meal, corn masa, masa harina, hominy, enriched flour, enriched meal, bran, germ, or be an enriched product such as enriched bread or a fortified cereal. At least one serving of grains per day must be whole grain-rich.

CN labels are available only for main dish entrees that provide at least ½ ounce equivalent of the meat/meat alternates component of the USDA's meal patterns for the Child Nutrition Programs. Examples include beef patties, cheese or meat pizzas, meat or cheese and bean burritos, egg rolls, and breaded fish portions.

Product Formulation Statement (PFS) A PFS always contains: Manufacturer's letterhead. Name of product and product code number. Math calculations showing how the manufacturer determined the meal pattern contribution.

To meet USDA's whole grain-rich criteria, a product must contain at least 50% whole grains; the other grains must be either enriched, bran, or germ. Any other grain products offered that are not whole grain-rich must be enriched.

CN labels are found on the outer packaging of products purchased in bulk. If you have your food delivered by a vendor or purchase your food at a warehouse type store, you should be able to obtain CN labeled products.
