Wisconsin has a variety of rental assistance programs that are administered by the state of Wisconsin, local governments, and local community organizations. In general, these programs pay to a landlord a portion of a tenant's outstanding rent if the tenant is unable to pay their rent.

To benefit from Section 8 eligibility, candidates in Wisconsin must be at least 18 years of age and a United States citizen or eligible noncitizen. Citizens must provide proof of citizenship for all family members and disclose the Social Security Numbers of all family members older than 6 years of age.

Eligibility Requirements: Must by 18 years old and meet income guidelines, no drug/alcohol or violent criminal history in the past 5 years, not on the sex offender registry, and must have a good rental history to be eligible, and be eligible for Brown County housing program.

Public housing programs provide publicly-owned and publicly-operated housing for low-income families and single persons who are age 62 or older, have a disability, or are displaced by government action or disaster. Local housing authorities set income limits, and rent may not exceed 30% of income.

Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) To apply for either type of help, visit your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). Some PHAs have long waiting lists, so you may want to apply at more than one PHA. Your PHA can also give you a list of locations at which your voucher can be used.

If you want to live in section 42 housing, you must meet the income and asset qualifications based on the size of your family. Qualifications will look like this: Your income must be no less than 30 percent and no greater than 50 percent of your area's median income limits as defined by HUD.
