Many employers in the State of Washington comply with the law of reimbursing their employees for using their own personal car or vehicle for work-related travel. This can be as simple as running errands or as large as picking up clients or driving across the state on a regular basis.

Employee mileage reimbursement can be provided in two different ways: through the IRS mileage rate, or through FAVR (Fixed and Variable Rate). The simplest arrangement is to use a flat rate per business mile driven.

The 2024 mileage reimbursement rate for business-related driving is 67 cents per mile. The medical and moving mileage rate is 21 cents per mile, and the charity mileage rate is 14 cents per mile.

The per diem rate for lodging is $174 and per diem for one day of meals and incidental expenses is $59.

If you're a mobile employee who uses your personal vehicle for work, you are probably getting reimbursed by your employer. You may be wondering if that reimbursement is taxed or if all of it goes back into your pocket. Generally, mileage reimbursement is not taxed as income.

California Labor Code section 2802 requires employers to reimburse their employees for mileage they incur in the course of their employment. Section 2804 says that employees cannot “waive” (i.e., forfeit) their right to receive reimbursement for miles driven for work.
