Illinois has no restrictions on maximum working hours for minors aged 16 and 17.

For Minors Ages 16 and 17: Work is prohibited during these hours: 10 p.m. Sunday - Thursday (midnight Friday and Saturday and when school is not in session) to 7 a.m. (5 a.m. when school is not in session). 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. in door-to-door sales.

c Maximum hours/days when school is not in session: 8 hours daily / 50 hours weekly/ 6 days weekly. Workers 16 and up may work up to 50 hours in one week and up to 10 hours a day only between the last day of school and Labor Day.

Before allowing a minor to begin work, you must obtain and keep on file, at the minor's workplace, a fully completed Parent/School Authorization. As the employer, it is your responsibility to ensure that this form is completed by you before collecting signatures.

14-15 years old 5 a.m. – 9 p.m. Exception: Youth 14-17 years old are allowed to work 7 days a week in dairy, livestock, hay harvest, and irrigation during school and non-school weeks.

16-17 years old ** No later than 9 p.m. on more than 2 consecutive nights before a school day. 5 a.m. – 10 p.m.

7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (9 p.m. to 6 a.m. during authorized school breaks). 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. There is no days per week restriction. 16 and 17-year-old minors enrolled in school may not work for more than nine hours in any one day, 40 hours in a school week, 48 hours in a non-school week, and six days in any one week.

You must have and post a Minor Work Permit for every workplace where you employ one or more people under 18 years of age. You must also have an Industrial Insurance endorsement. Some work duties are prohibited for minors.

You shouldn't usually be asked to work more than 40 hours a week or 8 hours a day. Your employer is allowed to ask you to work for longer in exceptional circumstances. They can only ask this if: no one who's 18 or over is available to do the work.
