Either you, your dependent, or both may enter the 1098-T and other education information in TaxAct®. If you claim a dependent, only you can claim the education credit. Therefore, you would enter Form 1098-T and the dependent's other education information in your return.

Education tax forms In January your school will send you Form 1098-T, a tuition statement that shows the education expenses you paid for the year. You'll use that form to enter the corresponding amounts on your tax return to claim an education tax credit or deduction.

Students can consent online to access and download their 1098-T form electronically. If you do not provide an affirmative consent online, you will receive a paper copy of your 1098-T by mail to the address we have on file. 1098-T forms are electronically available for download and mailed by the last week of January.

If you forgot to enter your 1098-T and are not going to claim the education credit AND did not have taxable scholarship income (scholarships that exceeded the tuition paid) you do not have to amend your tax return. Keep a copy of it with your tax records for at least three years.

Education Credits and Deduction And, because the credit is partially refundable (up to 40%), you (or your parents) could get a refund even if you don't owe any taxes. That's right, the government could send you a check, up to $1,000 to help with your education expenses.

You, or the person who may claim you as a dependent, may be able to take either the tuition and fees deduction or claim an education credit on Form 1040 or 1040A for the qualified tuition and related expenses that were actually paid during the calendar year. There is no need to attach Form 1098-T to your tax return.

Yes, if you receive a Form 1098-T, any financial aid received during the tax year will be displayed in Box 5. Note that if your tuition and fees were entirely covered by financial aid, you will not receive a Form 1098-T.

Form 1098-T allows up to $4,000 in deductions. As with any tax deduction, that can lower your AGI and potentially increase your tax refund. It's important to remember that you can only claim one educational tax benefit per student in a tax year.
