There are some resources available that may be able to help you catch up on unpaid rent. One way to find out about your options is to contact your local Housing Assessment and Resource Agency (HARA). Your HARA should help you figure out what rental assistance you might qualify for and help you apply.

In Michigan, you don't have to file a written answer before attending the hearing, though. However, if you want to try to stop or postpone the eviction, then you must attend the scheduled hearing. At the hearing, the judge will consider both sides of the argument and make a decision.

Holdover Tenants A holdover tenant is someone who stays in the home after a lease ends. If rent is paid monthly, the landlord must give the tenant one month's notice to terminate the tenancy before filing a court case. A holdover tenant is not a trespasser.
