On the surface, more than half of states do not allow the ownership of veterinary practice by non veterinarians. Only about 15 states officially legalize non-veterinarians owning vet practice. All the others may or may not allow you to own a vet practice as a non veterinarian.

Question: Does a veterinarian have to own a veterinary clinic? Obviously, if a veterinary practice is run by a sole proprietor, the sole proprietor must be a licensed veterinarian. In a partnership, at least one partner must be a licensed veterinarian.

A veterinary technician is a person who has graduated from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician School or program, and has a passing score on the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE).

After You Graduate You will be graduated with an Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology, and will be eligible to take the VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Examination) required to become a licensed veterinary technician in Nebraska. The exam costs $300, and licensure in Nebraska costs $100.

As mentioned above, graduating from an AVMA-accredited program is a prerequisite for taking both the national and state veterinary technician exams in North Carolina. Before practice, vet techs in NC must be licensed as registered veterinary technicians (RVTs).

No person may practice veterinary medicine and surgery in the state who is not a licensed veterinarian, no person may perform delegated animal health care tasks in the state who is not a licensed veterinary technician or an unlicensed assistant performing such tasks within the limits established under subdivision (2) ...

(1) No person may practice veterinary medicine in the state who is not an actively licensed veterinarian or the holder of a valid temporary permit issued by the board.

All unlicensed staff in a veterinary facility are considered veterinary assistants and may assist with supporting tasks under the direct or indirect supervision of a DVM or under the direct supervision of an RVT, but are not allowed to perform tasks restricted to DVMs, RVTs or VACSPs.
