Form I-192 is an application for a specific type of waiver used by people wishing obtain such forgiveness and enter the U.S. on a temporary, nonimmigrant basis. (It's of no use to anyone applying for an immigrant visa, otherwise known as lawful permanent residence or a green card.)

The adjustment of status timeline is generally 8 to 14 months for family-based applications (and often longer for other application types). However, the most significant advantage to adjusting status is that the intending immigrant may remain in the United States with family during the process.

In order to retain or obtain lawful permanent residence status, they are required to use Form I-508 to waive diplomatic or similar rights, privileges, exemptions, and immunities that may be granted to them under any law or Executive Order.

You can generally request expedited processing by calling the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833) or by asking Emma after you have obtained a receipt notice. (You can access Emma by clicking on the Ask Emma icon on the top right of this page).

The I-508 form is used by individuals who are applying for US citizenship who currently have nonimmigrant visas in one of three categories: Category A Visa – Diplomat or foreign government official. Category E Visa – Treaty Trader or Treaty Investor. Category G Visa – Employees of international organizations and NATO.

In order to retain or obtain lawful permanent residence status, they are required to use Form I-508 to waive diplomatic or similar rights, privileges, exemptions, and immunities that may be granted to them under any law or Executive Order.

File your Form I-508 with your local USCIS office, unless you are filing it at the same time as Form I-131, Application for Travel Document. In this case, you would file Form I-508 with the same USCIS office as your Form I-131.
