The Center for Cancer Risk Assessment provides comprehensive care for patients and families that have hereditary cancer predisposition. Our team provides hereditary cancer risk assessment, education, genetic testing and coordinated medical care across a variety of specialty programs.

Some types of cancer can run in families. For example, your risks of developing certain types of breast cancer, bowel cancer or ovarian cancer are higher if you have close relatives who developed the condition.

Genetic tests for cancer are typically done on a sample of blood, saliva (spit), cheek cells (from swabbing the inside of your mouth), but they can also be done on other body tissues.

A hereditary cancer risk assessment is the key to identifying patients and families who may be at increased risk of developing certain types of cancer. This assessment should be performed by obstetrician–gynecologists or other obstetric–gynecologic care providers and should be updated regularly.

Inherited cancers are those caused by a mutation in a gene that was present in the egg or sperm cell at the time of fertilization. These cancers make up a fraction of common cancers—like breast, colon, and prostate cancer—as well as less common cancers like pancreatic and ovarian cancer.

Genetic testing for Lynch syndrome is typically not recommended for children younger than 18 but can be considered once your children reach adulthood.

About the Hereditary Cancer Program Services include genetic counselling and information about cancer screening. People at risk of hereditary cancer may also be offered genetic testing. The Hereditary Cancer Program works to educate the public and health care providers about hereditary cancer.
