How to fill out the IRS 8880 online

The IRS Form 8880 allows users to claim a credit for qualified retirement savings contributions. Completing this form online requires attention to detail, and understanding each section will facilitate the process and ensure accuracy in filing your tax return.

Follow the steps to fill out the IRS 8880 online effectively.

  2. Enter your social security number and the name(s) as shown on your return at the top of the form.
  3. Proceed to line 1 and report contributions made to traditional or Roth IRAs and ABLE accounts. Note that rollover contributions should not be included.
  4. On line 2, input any elective deferrals to a 401(k) or other qualified employer plan, which can include employee contributions made during the tax year.
  5. Add the amounts from lines 1 and 2, and record the total on line 3.
  6. If you received certain distributions after 2018 but before the due date of your tax return, report those on line 4. Remember to check the instructions for any exceptions.
  7. Subtract line 4 from line 3. If this number is zero or less, enter zero on line 5.
  8. On line 6, record the smaller of line 5 or $2,000, calculated separately for each spouse if filing jointly.
  9. Add the amounts from line 6 and enter the total on line 7. If this total is zero, you cannot take this credit.
  10. On line 8, enter the amount from line 11 of your main tax form (Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR).
  11. Using the prescribed table to find the applicable decimal amount based on your filing status, enter this on line 9.
  12. Multiply the amount on line 7 by the decimal amount from line 9 and record this on line 10.
  13. Consult the Credit Limit Worksheet to determine any limitations based on your tax liability, entering the result on line 11.

Use Form 8880 to figure the amount, if any, of your retirement savings contributions credit (also known as the saver's credit). claimed on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 20.

Distributions of dividends paid on stock held by an employee stock ownership plan under section 404(k) Distributions from a military retirement plan (other than the federal Thrift Savings Plan) Distributions from an inherited IRA by a nonspousal beneficiary.

Individual Retirement Accounts Contributions to both traditional and Roth IRAs are eligible for the Saver's Tax Credit. Voluntary after-tax contributions to a qualified retirement plan or 403(b) annuity also qualify for the Saver's Tax Credit.

Use Form 8880 to figure the amount, if any, of your retirement savings contributions credit (also known as the saver's credit). claimed on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 20.

Unlike the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), if you work and don't owe income tax, you cannot claim the Saver's Tax Credit. Some families with children who earn moderate incomes may get a larger EITC when they contribute income to a retirement account through pre-tax salary deductions and claim the Saver's Tax Credit.

Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) must fall below the income limits for your filing status. For 2022, single filers with an AGI of $34,000 or more, head of household filers with AGI of $51,000 or more and joint filers with an AGI of $68,000 or more are ineligible to claim the credit.
