In order to pass to the next grade, students in Grades 7, 8 and 9 must pass their mathematics exams, at the end of the year, with at least a moderate achievement or level 3. Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are expected to have at least level 2 or 3 to pass.

It determines student strengths and weaknesses and provides feedback on progress. It determines if a student is ready for summative assessment. Since 1998, the norm for repetition in the South African basic education sector has been restricted to one year per schooling phase where necessary (Department of Education, 1998), whereby progression has been used to prevent a learner from being retained in a phase for longer than four years.

Currently the policy is that a child can only repeat once in each of the four education cycles: the Foundation Phase (grades 1 to 3), the Intermediate Phase (grades 4 to 7), the Senior Phase (grades 8 to 9) and the Further Education and Training Phase (grades 10 to 12).

Classroom assessment is a process of identifying, gathering, organizing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information about what learners know and can do.

40% or more in the second required official language at First Additional Language level; 40% or more in Mathematics; 40% or more in any three of the other required subjects – including Natural Sciences, Life Orientation, Social Sciences, Arts and Culture, and Economic Management Sciences.

In Grade R most of the assessment takes place through observation, with the teacher recording the results of the assessment using a checklist. Thus, as the year progresses a full picture of each child complete with challenges and strengths is gradually built.
