Our courts don't take skipping jury duty lightly. When a person ignores their summons to appear for service, they can be held in contempt of court. Penalties for doing so are significant and may include fines and actual jail time.

If you are on a jury and your case comes to verdict before your last day of service, then resume calling the jury hotline. For the first day or ½ day of actual attendance, you will be paid $30.00 for a full day or $15.00 for a ½ day. For subsequent days, you will be paid $45.00 for a full day or $22.50 for a ½ day.

Excuse from Service You have no means of transportation. You would have to travel an excessive distance to the courthouse. You have a physical or mental impairment. You provide care for a dependent and cannot afford to have someone cover for you. Serving would be an extreme financial burden.

Persons summoned as jurors who, without reasonable excuse, either fail to appear for jury service or refuse to serve, shall be liable for a fine not to exceed $500, payable to the county in which the person was summoned, or may be punished for contempt of court.

Jurors will receive $40.00 per day. You will be paid for reporting whether or not you are selected for a trial. You may also elect to donate your pay for jury service to the Kent County Foster Care program through the Generous Juror Program.
