Certified Addiction Counselors Have Many Names While many states use the term Certified Addiction Counselor or CAC, there are also other common names for this job. Many states call these professionals Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, or a CADC.

CAADE college programs are designed to provide students who have no prior experience in the field of Alcohol and Drug Counseling with a competency-based educational program that meets certification standards in California in the most efficient, effective, and inexpensive manner available.

CATC stands for Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor. This board offers CATC, CATC I, CATC III, CATC IV, and CATC V. Each level requires more education and experience levels. While the highest level of certification through CCAP only has a master's degree requirement, the CATC V requires a doctoral degree.

In order to become certified as a substance abuse counselor, you'll need to complete a Master's degree in social work or psychology. Your degree options include an MS, MA or MSW (Master's in Social Work). Some programs will allow you to specialize in substance abuse counseling during your graduate work.

Supervised Experience At the CADC-I level you will need 4,000 of supervised work experience providing Alcohol and Drug counseling to clients under supervision. At the LAADC level you will need 10,000 hours if you do not have a degree. For the LAADC if you have an AA degree this is reduced to 6,000 hours.
