Follow the steps to complete the Soapy Stress Activity form.

  1. Press the 'Get Form' button to access the Soapy Stress Activity form. This will open the document for you to begin filling it out.
  2. In the first section, provide your name and the date. This helps identify your submission.
  3. For the Tensional Stress section, draw a representation of the soap and indicate the forces acting on it with arrows. Provide a description of the observation regarding where the soap broke in the designated space.
  4. In the Compressional Stress section, repeat the drawing process for the soap, indicating compressional forces. Describe the observation similarly.
  5. Move to the Shear Stress section and again draw the soap and the forces acting upon it. Ensure you provide a detailed description of the breakage.
  6. In the Force Analysis, explain why breaking a rock requires more force than breaking soap, incorporating the term 'force' into your answer.
  7. Complete the bonus problem by drawing the soap under combination stresses, labeling your arrows appropriately for compression and tension.
  8. Review your completed form for accuracy and completeness. When satisfied, you can save changes, download, print, or share your filled-out form.

A prime example of tensional stress is the mid-Atlantic ridge, where the plates carrying North and South America are moving west, while the plates carrying Africa and Eurasia are moving east. Tensional stress can also occur well within an existing plate, if an existing plate begins to split itself into two pieces.

Rocks that are pulled apart are under tension. Rocks under tension lengthen or break apart. Tension is the major type of stress at divergent plate boundaries. When forces are parallel but moving in opposite directions, the stress is called shear (figure 2).

Tension: Stress which occurs when rock pulls apart or gets longer. Shear Stress: Stress which occurs when tectonic plates move past each other causing rock to twist or change shape.

Tensional stress is when a rock is pulled apart. For example, if a rock wedged itself into the crack of another rock, and movement of the earth's crust caused it to wedge even further until the rock broke apart.

The three types are compressional, tensional and shear.

Tensional stress involves forces pulling in opposite directions, which results in strain that stretches and thins rock. Compressional stress involves forces pushing together, and the compressional strain shows up as rock folding and thickening.

Tensional stress happens at divergent plate boundaries where two plates are moving away from each other. Shear stress is experienced at transform boundaries where two plates are sliding past each other.

There are four types of stresses that affect rocks: confining, compression, tension, or shear. Rocks under stress may show strain or deformation. Deformation can be elastic or plastic, or the rock may fracture. The amount of stress on a rock may be greater than the rock's strength.
