Part of those 44 sounds include the "blends." Blends are 2 or 3 consonants combined to form a distinct sound such as: bl cl, fl, gl, pl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, sk, sl, sp, st, sw, spr, cr, str.

A blend is two consonants together that each make a sound. For example, in the word "s to p" the /s/ and the /t/ each make a sound. A blend is different than a digraph, which has two letters but only one sound. In the word "shop" - the /sh/ makes only one sound.

What are consonant blends? /bl/ as in black, blue, and blind. /cl/ as in clean, clip, and clock. /fl/ as in flower, fly, and flat. /gl/ as in glad, glue, and globe.

A blend is a group of two or more consonants together, in which each letter can be heard. A blend comes before or after a vowel. A digraph is a group of two consonants that work together to make a single sound, or phoneme. A classroom sound wall can help students recall phonemes and their spellings.

Digraphs are two letters that make just one sound. CH in the word “chair” and PH in the word “phone” are both examples of digraphs. Blends are two or more consonants that BLEND together but each sound can still be heard. For instance, the words “skirt” and “clock” start with the blends SK and CL.

Final blends appear at the end of a word and are grouped into “s”, “l” and “n” final letter blends. The names indicate the beginning letter of the blend. An “s” final consonant blend would be “-st” in “last” or “-sk” in “mask.” The “l” final consonant blend would be “-ld” in “cold”.

In other words, a digraph corresponds to a single phoneme whereas a blend corresponds to two or three phonemes (sounds) blended together. For example, the word tree contains a two-consonant blend of t and r. Each letter makes its own sound and these sounds are blended together into tr.

The most common beginning blends that are typically introduced to students first include bl, br, cl, br, dr, fr, tr, fl, gl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm, sp, and st.
