What is a Welcome to Country? A Welcome to Country ceremony is performed by Aboriginal Traditional Owners for people visiting their Country. These ceremonies vary from speeches of welcome to traditional dance and smoking ceremonies.

Land Councils assist traditional owners to acquire and manage their land. Royalty equivalents for mining activity on Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory are paid to the Aboriginals Benefit Account, administered by the federal government.

A Welcome to Country is a ceremony performed by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Elders, or Traditional Owners who have been given permission to welcome visitors onto their traditional land.

To support the elected representatives at both NSWALC and Local Aboriginal Land Councils and run the organisation's extensive land council network, NSWALC has a small administrative arm headed by Chief Executive Officer, Mr Yuseph Deen.

There are 31 local Aboriginal Land Councils, 17 Aboriginal Places and 5 Aboriginal Areas in the Region. A list of the local Aboriginal Land Councils in the Region and their general location is provided in Table 1 and shown in Figure 1.

An Acknowledgement of Country is a statement that shows awareness of and respect for Traditional Custodians of the land you're on and their long and continuing relationship with the land. Unlike a Welcome to Country, it can be delivered by a First Nations person or non-Indigenous person.

A LALC is taken to be a “public authority” for the purposes of the ICAC Act pursuant to section 248 of the Land Rights Act.

The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) oversees the network of 120 Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) that represent the many Aboriginal communities across NSW. NSWALC is an independent statutory corporation constituted under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (ALRA).

Welcome to Country is delivered by Traditional Owners, or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have been given permission from Traditional Owners, to welcome visitors to their Country.

A Welcome to Country or Traditional Welcome is where the traditional Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander custodians welcome people to their land at the beginning of a meeting, event or ceremony. This welcome must be conducted by an appropriate person such as a recognised Elder from the local area.
