Point Hope first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as the unincorporated Inuit settlement of "Tikirak." All of its 276 residents were Inuit. In 1890, it returned as Point Hope. Out of its 301 residents, 295 were Natives, 5 were White and 1 was "Other." It continued to return as Point Hope in 1900 and 1910.

Scientific studies confirm Tikiġaq is the longest continually inhabited area in North America. The Iñupiat came to this area to hunt bowhead whales some 2,500 years ago. Visiting Point Hope, you will learn about Old Tigara, Jabbertown and Ipiutak, a prehistoric site that was inhabited around 600 BC.

Point Hope peninsula is one of the oldest continuously occupied Iñupiat Eskimo areas in Alaska; several settlements have existed on the peninsula over the past 2,500 years. In the early 1970s the village moved to a new site just east of the old village because of erosion and periodic storm-surge flooding.

Now that the whaling is done, captains need to prepare for Qagruq, the three-day, highly regimented whaling feast, by making mikigaq, or fermented whale meat and blubber, sewing clothes and thinking of what they will say when they address the community.

It is reportedly the oldest continuously inhabited village on the North American continent with over 2,500 years of recorded history. The spit of land jutting into the Chukchi Sea resembles an index finger and Tikigaq means index finger in the Inupiaq language.
