Hydrogen bonds are a special type of dipole-dipole forces. In hydrogen bonding, the dipole-dipole attraction occurs between hydrogen and a highly electronegative atom(O,F,Cl,etc).

These bonds are extremely polar because of the high electronegativity difference between the atoms. This strong polarity causes very strong dipole-dipole interactions between molecules, called hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen bonds are weaker than chemical bonds.

Hydrogen Bonding. Hydrogen bonding is a special type of dipole-dipole attraction between molecules, not a covalent bond to a hydrogen atom. It results from the attractive force between a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to a very electronegative atom such as a N, O, or F atom and another very electronegative atom.

There are three different types of bonds found in hair: hydrogen, ionic, and covalent. Together, they build those strong interactions among protein chains, which in turn make up your hair fiber. Here's how they differ: Hydrogen bonds: These temporary bonds are the weakest of the three types.

Interactions (Bonds) in Hair Disulfide bonds: These are permanent covalent bonds between sulfur atoms. In hair, the only amino acid that has sulfur is cysteine. (Side note: the sulfur also causes the pungent smell when hair burns.)

Hydrogen can participate in both ionic and covalent bonding. When participating in covalent bonding, hydrogen only needs two electrons to have a full valence shell. As it has only one electron to start with, it can only make one bond.

Hydrogen bonds and London dispersion forces are both examples of van der Waals forces, a general term for intermolecular interactions that do not involve covalent bonds or ions.

Each amino acid is attached to another amino acid by a covalent bond, known as a peptide bond. When two amino acids are covalently attached by a peptide bond, the carboxyl group of one amino acid and the amino group of the incoming amino acid combine and release a molecule of water.

Covalent bonds, also known as disulfide bonds, are strong, permanent bonds that determine the hair's texture and shape. The number of disulfide bonds and their distribution is important for determining how curly the hair appears. These bonds are also responsible for your hair's strength.

There are three types of bond that link the protein chains together: disulphide bonds (which are strong); and hydrogen bonds and salt bonds (which are weaker). The shape of each hair is determined by the amount of strong, disulphide bonds it contains, as well as the distribution of those bonds.
