The chapters which come under plant diversity are: Diversity in living organisms. Biological classification. Plant kingdom.

However, nonvascular plants are the only plant divisions in which the gametophyte generation is dominant. The gametophytes are dominant and the sporophytes are physically attached to the gameto- phytes, as shown in Figure 22.1, and dependent on them for most of their nutrition.

-- Gametophyte is the dominant generation in mosses; sporophyte is dominant generation in ferns.

There are four main groups of land plants: bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms.

Nonvascular plants include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. They are the only plants with a life cycle in which the gametophyte generation is dominant.

The dominant form varies; the gametophyte is dominant in the mosses, and the sporophyte is dominant in the ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. In seedless plants, fertilization occurs when two haploid gametes fuse to form a zygote.

Pollen grains of wind-pollinated flowers are produced in large quantities to make sure that at least some pollen grains reach the stigmas of other flowers and successful pollination takes place as many pollen grains are wasted. These pollen grains are light and hence are easily transferred to other flowers.

Plant diversity refers to the existence of wide variety of plant species in their natural environments. There are around 300,000-500,000 species of vascular plants that exist on earth (Figure 1).
