The rules of QCDs You must be at least 70½ years old at the time you request a QCD. ... For a QCD to count toward your current year's RMD, the funds must come out of your IRA by your RMD deadline, which is generally December 31 each year. Funds must be transferred directly from your IRA custodian to the qualified charity.

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) can lower your adjusted gross income (AGI) while also satisfying the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules set by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). 2 This can help offset other taxes, such as Social Security.

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ years old or older to donate up to $100,000 total to one or more charities directly from a taxable IRA instead of taking their required minimum distributions.

Report correctly There is no special code for a QCD. Like other IRA distributions, QCDs are shown on Line 4 of Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. If part or all of an IRA distribution is a QCD, enter the total amount of the IRA distribution on Line 4a. This is the amount shown in Box 1 on Form 1099-R.

Normally, distributions from a traditional individual retirement arrangement (IRA) are taxable when received. With a QCD, however, these distributions become tax-free as long as they're paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization.

You can't make a QCD directly from your 401(k), but you can roll over your funds to an IRA and then make a donation.

The IRA assets go directly to charity, so donors don't report QCDs as taxable income and don't owe any taxes on the QCD, even if they do not itemize deductions. Some donors may also find that QCDs provide greater tax savings than cash donations for which charitable tax deductions are claimed.

What is a qualified charitable distribution? Generally, a qualified charitable distribution is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA (other than an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA) owned by an individual who is age 70½ or over that is paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity.
