Volcanoes are formed when the earth's plates move together or apart, causing magma to come up to the earth's surface. When magma reaches the surface, it's called lava. Different mixtures of lava help to create different types of volcanoes, including composite volcanoes, cinder cone volcanoes, and shield volcanoes.

Sixty percent of all active volcanoes occur at the boundaries between tectonic plates. Most volcanoes are found along a belt, called the “Ring of Fire” that encircles the Pacific Ocean. Some volcanoes, like those that form the Hawaiian Islands, occur in the interior of plates at areas called “hot spots.”

When a continental plate and oceanic plate converge, the denser oceanic plate is subducted. The descending plate is heated by pressure and Earth's geothermal gradient. This leads to the formation of magma. The magma rises to the surface, and a belt of composite volcanoes forms.

Volcanoes form at convergent plate boundaries where one plate subducts(goes/slides) under another. How are volcanoes formed? Most volcanoes occur where two plates meet. When two plates move apart causing a gap, hot molten rock - called lava - rises up between them.

Some types of volcanoes are exclusively made up of deposits of volcanic ash and other types of tephra. Others are nearly wholly made of lava flows. And yet others contain both pyroclastic deposits and lava flows, and possibly also lava domes, lahar, and/or landslide deposits.

Volcanoes both build and destroy landscapes. Eruptions of lava, ash, volcanic bombs, blocks, and cinders form new land on oceanic islands, and build towering and inspiring snow-covered peaks. Volcanic eruptions are also destructive as they can blow apart those very same mountains.

Deep within the Earth it is so hot that some rocks slowly melt and become a thick flowing substance called magma. Since it is lighter than the solid rock around it, magma rises and collects in magma chambers. Eventually, some of the magma pushes through vents and fissures to the Earth's surface.

Magma rises from the hot spots and erupts as lava through cracks in the Earth's surface forming volcanoes. As a plate moves slowly across a hot spot, a chain of volcanoes or volcanic islands can form.
