The hyoid bone (hyoid) is a small U-shaped (horseshoe-shaped) solitary bone, situated in the midline of the neck anteriorly at the base of the mandible and posteriorly at the fourth cervical vertebra.

The adult human skeleton usually consists of 206 named bones. These bones can be grouped in two divisions: axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton. The 80 bones of the axial skeleton form the vertical axis of the body. They include the bones of the head, vertebral column, ribs and breastbone or sternum.

The hyoid bone (hyoid) is a small U-shaped (horseshoe-shaped) solitary bone, situated in the midline of the neck anteriorly at the base of the mandible and posteriorly at the fourth cervical vertebra.

The skeleton Skull – including the jaw bone. Spine – cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and tailbone (coccyx) Chest – ribs and breastbone (sternum) Arms – shoulder blade (scapula), collar bone (clavicle), humerus, radius and ulna. Hands – wrist bones (carpals), metacarpals and phalanges. Pelvis – hip bones.

There are typically around 270 bones in human infants, which fuse to become 206 to 213 bones in the human adult. The reason for the variability in the number of bones is because some humans may have a varying number of ribs, vertebrae, and digits.

Radius. The radius (r, l) is a long, thin bone of the forearm (antebrachium)—a segment of the upper limb of the appendicular skeleton. Function: Articulates with the radius and the ulna of each arm, forms part of the elbow, provides attachments for several shoulder and arm muscles.

The bones of the human skeleton are classified by their shape: long bones, short bones, flat bones, sutural bones, sesamoid bones, and irregular bones (Figure 1). Figure 1. Shown are different types of bones: flat, irregular, long, short, and sesamoid.

The stapes is the smallest bone in the human body.
