A JSEA considers the environmental as well as health hazards. Its primary purpose is to help supervisors and workers implement and monitor the control measures established at the workplace to ensure high risk work is carried out safely.

A JSA is a form of risk assessment, which details step-by-step how a task is to be carried out safely. Sometimes the JSA is called a JSEA and includes environmental aspects as well. The name does not matter.

SWMS work well as a means of keeping record of worker tasks, whereas a JSA is a short form that outlines hazards associated with a specific role or task.

What is a job hazard analysis? A job hazard analysis (JHA), also called a job safety analysis (JSA), is a technique to identify the dangers of specific tasks in order to reduce the risk of injury to workers.

Job Safety Analysis (JSA) In a JSA, each basic step of the job is analyzed to identify potential hazards and to recommend the safest way to do the job. Other terms used to describe this procedure are job hazard analysis (JHA) and job hazard breakdown.

Job safety analysis has a much narrower scope, as it involves only job-specific risks. Risk assessment, on the other hand, gives a big picture view of all operational risks including environmental hazards, storm water and waste management, equipment maintenance, and more.

[Editor's note: JHA is an acronym for Job Hazard Analysis or Job Hazard Assessment, which is also commonly referred to as a JSA, meaning Job Safety Analysis.] My answer: They are the same thing, but represent different stages on a timeline. JHA is the process, and the Safe Work Procedure is the outcome.

The main difference between a JSA and risk assessment is scope. A JSA involves specific job risks and typically focuses on the risks associated with each step of that task. A risk assessment gives a higher-level or broader view of all operational risks across and entire business, project or type of activity.
