The crude pooled analysis of all studies showed a sensitivity of 76.2% (95% CI, 73.0% to 79.3%) of cervical cytology to cancer at a cutoff of HSIL or worse.

The Pap test (also called a Pap smear or cervical cytology) collects cervical cells so they can be checked for changes caused by HPV that may—if left untreated—turn into cervical cancer. It can find precancerous cells and cervical cancer cells.

Colposcopy. A colposcopy is a procedure that allows the doctor to see a magnified view of the cervix, vagina and vulva. This can help identify where abnormal or changed cells are and what they look like. The doctor will probably also take a tissue sample (biopsy) during the procedure.

The new cervical screening test procedure is similar to a Pap smear test. For both tests a doctor or nurse takes a sample of cells from the cervix. However, the Pap smear test used to look for abnormal cells in the cervix, while the cervical screening test looks for HPV infection.

CPT code 88141 (cytopathology, cervical or vaginal [any reporting system]; requiring interpretation by physician) is used to report smears that require separate interpretation by a physician.

Accuracy of the Pap Test Such studies have rarely been done for any screening test for cervical cancer. Studies that compare the Pap test with repeat Pap testing have found that the sensitivity of any abnormality on a single test for detecting high-grade lesions is 55% to 80%.

The sensitivity of voided urine cytology for detection of urothelial neoplasm ranges from 18% to 76% and is dependent on factors such as tumor grade, the number of specimens examined, and the expertise of the cytopathologist. Specificity of urine cytology specimens have been reported to be as high as 93%.
