Who is exempt from NJ sales tax?

The current Sales Tax rate is 6.625% and the specially designated Urban Enterprise Zones rate is one half the Sales Tax rate. Certain items are exempt from sales tax, such as food, clothing, drugs, and manufacturing/processing machinery and equipment. A resale exemption also exists.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) imposes a one-time 0.4% Luxury and Fuel-Inefficient Vehicle Surcharge (LFIS) on ownership of new passenger automobiles with a sales price or lease price of at least $45,000, or a fuel efficiency rating of less than 19 miles per gallon.

Section 18:25-1.5 - Tax rates (a) Luxury tax is imposed at a rate of nine percent except for sales of alcoholic beverages which are taxed at a rate of three percent.

If the items are delivered to a New Jersey address, the purchaser must pay Use Tax based on the purchase price, including any delivery/shipping charges. The Use Tax rate is the same as the Sales Tax rate, which is 6.625%.

The “supplemental titling fee” is a one-time fee imposed at the time a new vehicle is first titled in the State of New Jersey, in the amount of 0.4% of the sales price or the lease price, as determined in ance with the rules set forth below.

Visit a motor vehicle agency. Present the current registration and required identification. Pay the $6 fee for standard plates or the $11 fee for special interest or dedicated plates. You will be issued a replacement set.

In New Jersey, a sales tax of 6.625% is charged on the sale price of any new or used car. If you've made an out-of-state purchase, you'll have to pay the sales tax due when you register your used vehicle at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

To register, file a Business Registration Application (Form NJ-REG) online with the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services. Once registered, you will receive a New Jersey Business Registration Certificate and, if applicable, a New Jersey Certificate of Authority (to be able to collect Sales Tax).
