Under normal circumstances, the answer is no. However, if an exposed hot wire comes into contact with a metal part of the outlet or appliance, it will create a circuit with the ground wire, protecting you from an electrical shock.

If your house has metal electrical boxes, you must connect the fixture ground wire to the green ground screw on the crossbar. If your house is newer or has been recently rewired and has plastic electrical boxes, connect the fixture ground wire to the house ground wire (the bare copper wire without any insulation).

Bare wires can inevitably touch the wrong places: Hot wire to neutral wire means a short circuit that causes sparks to fly; hot wire to grounding wire, or to grounded metal box means ground fault and possible shock but sparks again will fly and burn can occur if you are touching the ground wire or metal box.

The ground wire is not connected to either the positive or negative terminal of a power source. Instead, it is typically connected to a grounding electrode, such as a metal rod driven into the earth, or to a grounding busbar, which is then connected to the grounding electrode.

A ground fault occurs when electricity takes an unplanned path to ground. The current drastically increases and causes the breaker to trip. A ground fault can be caused by damaged appliances, incorrect wiring, or worn wire insulation.

Leaving ground wires exposed can pose significant safety hazards and should be avoided whenever possible. When ground wires are not properly installed or concealed, several risks arise. Exposed ground wires increase the likelihood of accidental contact, which can result in electrical shocks or even electrocution.

When there is no ground wire present and a problem occurs in a piece of equipment you have plugged in, the equipment will likely become energized and therefore shock you when you touch the equipment.

If one of these wires breaks or becomes dislodged, the electrical current won't flow correctly though the device. At best, this ruins your device. At worst, the misdirected current could give a nasty and potentially lethal shock. The third prong grounds the device to prevent this issue.

Start by turning the multimeter to the highest AC voltage range available. Then, insert the two test probes into the hot and neutral slots of the outlet. If you then pull the black probe out and move it into the third outlet hole, a properly grounded outlet will display the same measurement on the multimeter.
