A proof load test is a process that requires the lift of a specific type of material (the rope or chain) using specially designed proof load test machines. With the lift, the system is able to measure the tensile strength and load capacity of the material based on elongation under force.

An elevator inspection or escalator inspection is typically performed by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). The purpose of an inspection is to evaluate whether or not all elevator equipment and its related counterparts meet current State and Municipal elevator code to ensure safety of all equipment for use.

What is a Five Year Elevator Load Test? The Five Year Elevator Load Test is required by the State in order to ensure that your elevator can lift its rated load at its rated speed. These tests also ensure the integrity of the hydraulic system, including the cylinder, oil line, and valve and tank unit.

A category 5 full-load test is a process intended to make sure that your elevator is performing in the way in which it was originally designed by lifting its rated (maximum) load at its rated (maximum) speed.

Both hydraulic elevators and elevators that are supported by cables should receive a full-load test once every 5 years. Hydraulic elevators also require annual pressure relief testing.

Elevator Testing and Inspections These tests make sure that elevators can lift their maximum load while traveling at their maximum speed. Load tests also check how elevators operate with no load, as well as test how well brake mechanisms are working.

The Category 1 testing requirement 8.6. 4.19. 7 of B44 Safety Code for Elevators requires that the elevator be tested while operating under standby or emergency power (EP) conditions and not via simulation.
