AGENCY: Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Homeland Security.

Exposure is defined as a fire resulting from another fire outside that building, structure, or vehicle, or a fire that extends to an outside property from a building, structure, or vehicle. For example, if the building fire ignites a truck parked outside, the truck fire is an exposure fire.

What is the NFIRS code for a structure fire? The NFIRS Incident Type for a structure fire (a building fire) is 111. (One hundred and eleven.) Note: Code 111 excludes “confined fires”, e.g. chimney fires or contained cooking fires.

NFIRS data is an asset because it allows users of NFIRS to identify trends, quantify activities, determine causes, plan the deployment of limited resources, and help in the reduction of loss of life and property caused by fires.

Benefits of using NFIRS Fire departments can use NFIRS to track and manage apparatus, personnel and casualty information, document the full range of department activity, and justify budgets with summary and statistical data.

They help safety, security, environmental, quality and facility managers recognize trends and identify where additional resources are required in order to guarantee that no major incidents happen.

The NFIRS has two objectives: to help state and local governments develop fire reporting and analysis capability for their own use, and to obtain data that can be used to more accurately assess and subsequently combat the fire problem at a national level.

A good intent incident is when the fire department are dispatched to a scene but upon arrival and investigation the scene is not the incident type reported, and is no threat/problem.
