The VDI 2230 is a German guideline of the VDI e.V. – The Association of German Engineers – initially developed for the automotive industry and today recognized by all industries internationally as the standard reference work for calculating high-strength bolted joints.

What is K-Factor in Bolt Torque? K-Factor is a value that's important for calculating the target input torque for your fastener. An accurate k-factor can be determined only by doing experiments with the lubricant and fastener you plan to use.

The accuracy of using a nominal fastener diameter, D, to apply a constant nut factor across a range of fastener sizes depends on the extent to which fastener diameter affects reaction torque.

The most commonly used bolting K factors are 0.20 for plain finished bolts, 0.22 for zinc plated bolts, and 0.10 for waxed or highly lubricated bolts. The only way to properly determine the optimum tightening torque for a given application is to simulate the exact application.

The relationship between the torque applied to a fastener and the tension created from the resulting bolt elongation is most commonly described by T = F*K*D where T is torque, K is the nut or friction factor (nut factor for this article), D is the bolt diameter and F is the bolt tension or preload.

Underhead Torque: The amount of the input torque it takes to overcome friction in the bearing surface of the part of the fastener being turned.

DETERMINING TORQUE The general equation for bolt load based on applied torque is T = KFiDb where K = torque coefficient. K is a function of the coefficients of friction and collar friction in the joint, and these are based on variables such as surface finish, coatings, and so on.

A threaded fastener (for example, bolt/screw) is a fastener, a portion of which has some form of screw thread. A bolt/screw is made up of the shank and the head. The shank is threaded, either for part of its length or for the full length from the end to the head. Longer bolts are usually only partly threaded.
