HMRC will tell you: whether they're registered for the Construction Industry Scheme ( CIS )...Make sure you have: your Unique Taxpayer Reference ( UTR ) the reference number for your HMRC accounts office. your HMRC employer reference.

CIS – individual registration for payment under deduction. CIS301 NOTES. Unique tax reference (UTR) The UTR is the 10-digit tax reference number given to you when you register as self-employed. You will find this on your personal Tax Return or other personal correspondence from your HM Revenue & Customs office.

CIS is the Construction Industry Scheme. Contractors must register and are required to deduct money from subcontractors' payments, which counts towards their tax and National Insurance.

You can go online via the 'Government Gateway' – or you can Telephone HMRC on the CIS helpline (0300 200 3210) and give your UTR – or your company's UTR if registering as a company – and personal details including your national Insurance number and – if appropriate – your VAT number.

Contractors must register for the scheme. Subcontractors do not have to register, but deductions are taken from their payments at a higher rate if they're not registered. If you're already registered as a contractor, you can sign in to CIS online to file your monthly returns or to verify a subcontractor.

Most people who are assigned female at birth identify as girls or women, and most people who are assigned male at birth identify as boys or men. These people are cisgender (or cis).

Deductions suffered by a sole trader or partnership are treated as a payment on account of the tax due on their profits. In contrast, deductions suffered by a company are treated as a payment on account of that company's liabilities.
