Tax deficiency is when the amount of taxes you reported on your return are different from what the IRS calculates you owe. If you file a tax return with a sum different from the income your employers reported, that's a tax deficiency.

The CP3219N is a Notice of Deficiency (90-day letter). Once you receive your notice, you have 90 days (150 days if the notice is addressed to a person who is outside the country) from the date of the notice to file a petition with the Tax Court, if you want to challenge the tax we proposed.

One of the common reasons why the IRS issues a Notice of Deficiency is because income that was reported to them by a third party, like an employer or bank, was not included on the submitted return. You want to compare the information in the letter with your tax return.

The IRS sends notices and letters for the following reasons: You have a balance due. You are due a larger or smaller refund. We have a question about your tax return.

The Statutory Notice of Deficiency, required by law, is issued to inform you that you owe additional tax, penalties and interest. You have the right to appeal this decision with the U.S. Tax Court.

If you are in some kind of IRS proceeding, such as Audits or Collections, the IRS might send you Letter 729 stating that they want your return. They will not process your case until you have filed. For retirement plans the IRS will send a Notice CP403 or CP406 requesting Form 5500.

After 60 days, you'd need to file an amended return to reverse any errors and get your refund back. If the IRS thinks you claimed erroneous deductions or credits, the IRS can hold your refund.

File an amended return using IRS form 1040X if the notice of deficiency reveals that a mistake on your previous return caused the deficiency. Mail the 1040X to the address referenced in the instructions to form 1040X. Allow eight to 12 weeks for your 1040X to be processed.
