Federal case files are maintained electronically and are available through the internet-based Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) service. PACER allows anyone with an account to search and locate appellate, district, and bankruptcy court case and docket information.

The DC Superior Court online case search system provides docket information for most cases as well as document images in some cases. Docket information and document images are available within minutes of being input or scanned into the court record.

The District Court handles misdemeanors where the maximum sentence is 2 ½ years in the House of Corrections. The Superior Court has authority over all crimes and most often handles major felony cases.

Interested entities may access and obtain copies of court records via either in-person requests or through the online portals. For in-person requests, requesters may visit the clerk's office in the particular courthouse where the records are maintained.

To request a desired record, record seekers need to contact the MPDC Arrest and Criminal History section at (202) 727-4245 or visit the section in person to make inquiries. However, it should be noted that not every police record is open to the public.

Many Washington State courts have a public access terminal in the courthouse where you can view JIS public record case information such as an index of filed cases and a list of documents filed in each case. Contact your local court to see if they have a public access terminal.
