Sometimes, elevated follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels are measured to confirm menopause. When a woman's FSH blood level is consistently elevated to 30 mIU/mL or higher, and she has not had a menstrual period for a year, it is generally accepted that she has reached menopause.

The Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) is a health-related quality of life scale (HRQoL) and was developed in response to the lack of standardized scales to measure the severity of aging-symptoms and their impact on the HRQoL in the early 1990s.

The Menopause Rating Scale ranged from 9-21 score with a mean of 12. The most commonly reported symptoms were hot flushes (90%) and sleep disturbances (89%) followed by palpitations (42%). Sexual problems (18%) and bladder symptoms (12%) were reported least frequently.

The Greene Scale provides a brief measure of menopause symptoms. It can be used to assess changes in different symptoms, before and after menopause treatment. Three main areas are measured: Psychological.

Menopause Markers Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels are higher than luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, and both rise to even higher values than those seen in the surge during the menstrual cycle. The FSH rise precedes the LH rise. FSH is the diagnostic marker for ovarian failure.
