Personal hygiene items for each person, such as hand sanitizer, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, and wipes. Child care supplies or other special care items. Trash bags, plastic sheeting, scissors, and duct tape. Common tools. A copy of your family emergency plan.

A secure drill is used when there is a threat on the outside of the building. It teaches all staff and students to get inside, lock outside doors and conduct business as usual.

DHS recommends using plastic sheeting with a thickness of 4 to 6 mil (0.004 in - 0.006.) or greater. For reference, commercially available sheeting is typically sold at 0.7, 1, 1.2, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 6, and 10 mil.

Gather essential disaster supplies ahead of time including canned food, a hand-operated can opener, bottled water, battery-powered radios, a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, duct tape, plastic sheeting and plastic garbage bags. Remember not to drink water from the tap as it may make you sick.

STAY / SHELTER-IN-PLACE For maximum protection, stay inside or immediately go inside. Close and lock exterior doors and windows. Seek shelter in an interior room.

Sheltering in place may be required because of an emergency such as a threat of violence, a weather situation such as a tornado or hurricane, or a public health situation like an infectious disease outbreak.

Shelter in Place will be used when it is safer for employees to remain inside the building than to evacuate. Interior windowless rooms can be used for SIP, and employees should make themselves aware of designated SIP locations within the building.

Move to an interior room with no windows, or a hallway on the lowest floor possible. Move to an interior stairwell if all rooms have windows. Stay in the center of the room away from doors and windows. Stay in place until the danger has passed.
