There are different types of power of attorney and you can set up more than one. Ordinary power of attorney. Lasting power of attorney (LPA) Enduring power of attorney (EPA)

The LPA is a legal document which allows a person who is at least 21 years of age ('Donor'), to voluntarily appoint one or more persons ('Donee(s)') to make decisions and act on his/her behalf if he/she loses mental capacity one day.

The Court of Protection can: decide whether you have the mental capacity to make a decision. make an order relating to the health and care decisions or property and financial decisions of someone who lacks mental capacity. appoint a deputy to make decisions on behalf of someone who lacks mental capacity.

A health and welfare LPA gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine (washing, dressing, eating), medical care, moving into a care home and life-sustaining medical treatment. It can only be used if you're unable to make your own decisions.

For an LPA to be valid, it must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. The OPG will notify you after they have received and accepted your application. Thereafter, there will be a mandatory waiting period of 3 weeks where objections could be filed, before the LPA is registered.

Ultimately the Office of Public Guardian (OPG) or the Court of Protection can remove a power of attorney in the UK.
