What is mortality? Mortality is another term for death. A mortality rate is the number of deaths due to a disease divided by the total population. If there are 25 lung cancer deaths in one year in a population of 30,000, then the mortality rate for that population is 83 per 100,000.

The mortality table is the basis for calculating the average life expectancy in a society that provides a view of death mortality rates in a nation. It describes the likelihood that a person will pass away at a specific age or live to a specific age.

That is the average number of deaths each year at age x last birthday in the relevant three-year period, divided by the average population at that age over the same period.

A mortality table, also known as a life table or actuarial table, shows the rate of deaths occurring in a defined population during a selected time interval, or survival rates from birth to death.

Age-specific rates increased 10.1% for age group 1–4 (from 22.7 deaths per 100,000 population in 2020 to 25.0 in 2021), 4.4% for 5–14 (13.7 to 14.3), 5.6% for 15–24 (84.2 to 88.9), 13.4% for 25–34 (159.5 to 180.8), and 16.1% for 35–44 (248.0 to 287.9).

There are two types of mortality tables: The generation life table, also known as the cohort life table, “summarizes the specific mortality rate of a set of people sharing the same age. In contrast, the period life table calculates death rates for a certain population over a specified period.

The mortality rate is very low during childhood, then increases exponentially from age 30; it is lower for females at all ages.
