The Vietnam War was a long conflict in Southeast Asia. It began in 1954, after the country of Vietnam was split into two parts, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam wanted to reunite the country under Communism, its political and economic system. South Vietnam fought to keep this from happening.

The United States entered Vietnam with the principal purpose of preventing a communist takeover of the region. In that respect, it failed: the two Vietnams were united under a communist banner in July 1976. Neighbouring Laos and Cambodia similarly fell to communists.

The “Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring the Peace in Vietnam” stipulated that all American forces would withdraw from Vietnam in 60 days and that all American prisoners would be returned by the North Vietnamese.

In his 1995 article for Scholastic Update, ''The Vietnam Wars,'' Tod Olson uses the terms 'pantheon' and 'string of heroes' to describe Vietnam's history of rebellion against foreign invaders. The string of heroes was made up of male and female warriors who fought against Chinese rule.

The Vietnam War was the prolonged struggle between nationalist forces attempting to unify the country of Vietnam under a communist government and the United States (with the aid of the South Vietnamese) attempting to prevent the spread of communism.
