Sacagawea's memories of Shoshone trails led to Clark's characterization of her as his “pilot.” She helped navigate the Corps through a mountain pass—today's Bozeman Pass in Montana—to the Yellowstone River.

Sacagawea was an interpreter and guide for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's expedition westward from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast.

Some historians say Sacagawea was critical in helping Lewis and Clark make their way through the wilderness and up the Missouri River, and it is generally agreed that just having a Native American woman and baby with them helped put other tribes at ease.

So why is Sacagawea an important American to know? She was instrumental in the Lewis & Clark Expedition as a guide as they explored the western lands of the United States. Her presence as a woman helped dispel notions to the Native tribes that they were coming to conquer and confirmed the peacefulness of their mission.

Sacagawea , Shoshone Indian guide who led the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–06). Having been captured by Hidatsa Indians, she had been separated from her people for nearly 10 years when the expedition began. Carrying her infant son on her back, she traveled thousands of wilderness miles with the expedition.

Why was it important that Sacagawea came from a nomadic tribe? Coming from a nomadic tribe meant that Sacagawea had learned survival skills crucial to helping the Lewis and Clark expedition succeed.

They communicated and traded with the tribes, learning valuable information about their languages and customs. And they brought back many specimens of native plants and animals. Much of the credit for the success of the expedition can be given to their interpreter, Sacajawea.

Recognizing landmarks in her old neighborhood, Sacagawea reassured the explorers that the Shoshone - and their horses - would soon be found. When the Expedition did meet the Shoshone, Sacagawea helped the Corps communicate, translating along with her husband.
