How Is the Yale Interview Formatted? Yale University does not require interviews as part of its first-year application process, and students cannot request interviews. Instead, selected students—particularly those from whom admissions officers need more information—will be sent an interview invitation.

Traditionally, interviews were a way for colleges to verify the information in your application. More recently, Ivy League colleges have used interviews to give applicants more information about the college. During interviews, alumni typically tell candidates about their experience at the college.

The STAR method is a structured manner of responding to a behavioral-based interview question by discussing the specific situation, task, action, and result of the situation you are describing.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions prioritizes interviews for students for whom the Admissions Committee needs more information. ASC volunteers are not able to interview every candidate in every area. Interviews are not required, and your application will not be penalized if you are not offered an interview.

Students who do not receive an interview invitation will not be disadvantaged. If you are contacted to schedule an interview, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity. An interviewer can help you learn more about Yale and can share additional information about you with the admissions committee.

It's essential to do well if you get one. However, if you don't get an interview, don't worry! It isn't a required part of the application process, and Yale doesn't interview all applicants. Your application won't be at a disadvantage if you don't get an interview.

Applicants should be prepared to talk about themselves, their experiences, and their perspective on their life and place in the world. It is important to demonstrate an ability to engage in these topics thoughtfully.

An interview can provide an opportunity to share additional information with the Admissions Committee. All Yale interviews, both those with alumni and those with current Yale seniors, are evaluative. Admissions officers read interview reports alongside application materials.
