Get In Cylinder Pressure Transducer Waveforms

The transducer is used to measure the loads on the engines as a sensor for reading the engine knock. It can measure the pressure of gas and liquid after converting it into an electrical signal.

As the engine load increases, more fuel is injected into the cylinder and the in-cylinder pressure increases. Consequently, the pressure in the cylinder increases with increase in engine load and reaches a peak at high engine loads.

Cylinder pressure measurement is mostly performed with piezoelectric high-temperature pressure sensors that are installed through a mounting bore which has to be drilled in the cylinder head for this specific purpose. Measuring spark plugs with an integrated high-temperature pressure sensor are also used.

In-cylinder pressure analysis facilitates understanding of the quality of combustion, i.e., its timing, rate, stability, and stress developed. These factors affect the engine output – power and torque – i.e., the engine's performance.

Usually a transducer converts a signal in one form of energy to a signal in another. Transducers are often employed at the boundaries of automation, measurement, and control systems, where electrical signals are converted to and from other physical quantities (energy, force, torque, light, motion, position, etc.).

Most gas engine's compression should be between 125 and 175 PSI while a diesel will generally fall between 275 and 400 PSI. Remember to write down each of your findings. If one or more cylinders looks to be way off in PSI, you can re-run the test again just to check.

Ideally, peak firing pressure should be around 10-15 degrees ATDC. Bore diameter, combustion chamber design, piston shape, port design, cam timing, etc. will influence when you need to light the fire to put the highest pressure in that 10-15 degree ATDC area, where the most amount of work will be done.
