Life insurance premiums are not tax-deductible for most people. If you're a business owner and premiums for your employees are a business expense, they may be deductible. Life insurance payouts are typically not taxed, though if the deceased person's overall estate is very large they may be subject to estate tax.

PURPOSE: To record amount of funeral and/or interment expenses incurred by next of kin. ROUTINE USES: Information from these records may be disclosed to the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other Federal agencies in connection with eligibility, notification and assistance in obtaining benefits due.

Unfortunately, funeral expenses are not tax-deductible for individual taxpayers. This means that you cannot deduct the cost of a funeral from your individual tax returns. While individuals cannot deduct funeral expenses, eligible estates may be able to claim a deduction if the estate paid these costs.

How do I prepay funeral and cemetery expenses? A. Prepayment methods include life insurance, funeral insurance, funeral trusts, and bank-held trusts or savings accounts. You may wish to consult an attorney and Medicare or Medicaid, if applicable, before making a decision about paying for preneed expenses.

These may include your funeral expenses, debts you owe at your death, and expenses required to administer your estate. The good news is that these expenses are deductible on your es- tate tax return, which in turn, can produce estate tax savings for your family.

Election for decedent's expenses. You can deduct expenses incurred in the year of death on the final income tax return. You should file an amended return (Form 1040-X) for medical expenses incurred in an earlier year, unless the statutory period for filing a claim for that year has expired.

To apply for burial benefits, complete VA Form 21-530, Application for Burial Benefits. Attach a copy of the veteran's military discharge document (DD Form 214 or equivalent), death certificate, and funeral and burial bills.

Payable-on-death (POD) account A POD bank account allows you to put aside funds for your funeral and name someone who can get access to the money when you die. They present a death certificate to the bank and get the money — on the spot. It doesn't go through probate.
