Tukutuku panels consist of vertical stakes (traditionally made of kākaho), horizontal rods (traditionally made of stalks of bracken-fern or thin strips of tōtara wood), and flexible material of flax, kiekie and pīngao, which form the pattern.

Tukutuku panelling is a distinctive art form of the Māori people of New Zealand, a traditional latticework used to decorate meeting houses (wharenui). Other names are tuitui and arapaki. Tukutuku flank the posts around the edge of the wharenui, the posts are usually carved and represent ancestors.

Tukutuku is a traditional woven art from the Māori, the indigenous peoples of New Zealand. It is used to decorate their “whare tupuna,” traditional assembly or meeting houses, where patterns are an integral part of the history and genealogy of each tribe.

Tuku is a Maori verb meaning to gift, to cede, to give up or to allow and forms part of the word Kōtuku.

Each tukutuku design is named. A very common stepped design is named poutama, referring to education, progress and ascension. A whole panel covered with white crosses is called purapurawhetū (star seeds). Vertical bands of white crosses are known as roimata (tears).

: decorative Maori latticework usually of flax or kiekie stems and in the form of panels that are used especially between the carved posts of communal buildings (as a meetinghouse)

Most tukutuku panels are made with dried stalks of plants such as toetoe. Sometimes thin pieces of wood are used. The weavers tie the stalks together. They place some stalks horizontally (going from side to side) and some stalks vertically (going up and down).
