A food chain outlines who eats whom. A food web is all of the food chains in an ecosystem. Each organism in an ecosystem occupies a specific trophic level or position in the food chain or web. Producers, who make their own food using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, make up the bottom of the trophic pyramid.

Food Web. The network of all the inter-related food chains in a biological community. Autotroph. An organism that makes its food from light or chemical energy without eating.

Secondary consumers are the carnivorous animals that eat only herbivores. These consumers include smaller predators like foxes, but ants, fish, spiders, snakes and rats are secondary consumers, too.

Each living thing is a part of multiple food chains – for example, grass is a part of the food chain: grass → grasshopper → frog → snake → eagle, and also of the food chain: grass → deer → tiger. All of the interconnected and overlapping food chains in a habitat make up a food web.

What is the difference between a food web and a food chain? Food webs show how plants and animals are connected in many ways to help them survive. Food chains follow just one path as animals find food. All food chains and webs are powered by the sun's energy.

Food chains tend to be overly simplistic representations of what really happens in nature. Most organisms consume multiple species and are, in turn, consumed by multiple other species. A food web represents these more complex interactions.

A food chain only follows just one path as animals find food. eg: A hawk eats a snake, which has eaten a frog, which has eaten a grasshopper, which has eaten grass. A food web shows the many different paths plants and animals are connected.

A food chain shows a single path of energy and nutrients from organism to organism. A food web is a complex network made up of many food chains, where the energy can take several paths.
