The general rule is that the legal working age in California is 14-years-old, but anybody under the age of 18 must have a work permit. The permits are known as a Statement of Intent to Employ Minor and Request for Work Permit. Such permits are often issued by a minor's school.

Federal and state occupational restrictions are such that in most cases minors must be at least 14 years of age to begin working. Any minor who is at least 12 years of age may be issued a permit by school officials [EC 49111], however few occupations are available to them.

Youths 14 and 15 years old may work outside school hours in various non-manufacturing, non-mining, non-hazardous jobs under the following conditions, if no more than: 3 hours on a school day or 18 hours in a school week; • 8 hours on a non-school day or 40 hours in a non-school week.

All teens under 18 years of age must complete a work permit application and get a work permit before starting a new job. Please see the complete summary of the Massachusetts laws regulating child labor, including changes made in 2007, for further information.

WORKING PERMITS: Every minor 14 through 17 years of age must have a working permit unless otherwise stated in Chapter 4109.

Parents exempt from wage payment requirements. May not be employed in occupations declared hazardous in federal regulation for minors under 16 in agriculture (listed in the chart for 14 and 15-year-olds). School NOT in Session: Daily: 8 hours. Weekly : 40 hours.

When school is in session, 14- and 15- year-olds may work 3 hours per day, not to exceed 18 hours per week. You may also work 8 hours per day when school is not in session, not to exceed 40 hours per week. General information about work permits: You must have a work permit from your high school.

As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years old as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.
