Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram In the diagram above, you may notice that there are four main types of stars: main sequence, white dwarfs, giants and supergiants.

As hinted at by the H-R diagram in Figure 10.13, which shows an unbiased sample of stars in the solar neighborhood, red dwarfs are actually the most common type of star in the sky. They probably account for upward of 80 percent of all stars in the universe.

The classes are called O, B, A, F, G, K and M. Stars in the 'O' class are the most massive and hottest, with temperatures above 30,000 °C. Stars in the 'M' class are the smallest and coolest, with temperatures below 3,000 °C. If you look closely at stars in the sky, you notice they are not all the same colour.

Ninety percent of all stars on such a diagram fall along a narrow band called the main sequence. A minority of stars are found in the upper right; they are both cool (and hence red) and bright, and must be giants. Some stars fall in the lower left of the diagram; they are both hot and dim, and must be white dwarfs.

Also shown in Figure 10.12 is Mira, with a surface temperature (3000 K) about half that of the Sun, but its luminosity is some 400 times greater than the Sun's.

Stars can be classified within any of the seven spectral classes: O, B, A, F, G, K and M. On the HR diagram (Figure 1), temperature and spectral class are shown on the x-axis.

The schematic H-R diagram shows four groups of stars. The narrow band across the center is the "main sequence" of stars, which contains about 90% of stars. Main sequence stars are normal hydrogen-burning stars like our Sun. A star's position along the main sequence is determined entirely by its mass.

H-R Diagram Exercise By comparing the radii of different stars you will then find out the reason behind the names of the four categories of stars: white dwarfs, main-sequence stars, giants and supergiants.
