Abstract. Silver–Russell syndrome (SRS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous syndrome characterized by severe pre and postnatal growth retardation, body asymmetry and a typical facial phenotype with a triangular face and relative macrocephaly.

What causes Russell-Silver syndrome? Russell-Silver syndrome is a complicated disorder. Genetic abnormalities of certain genes that control growth have been found to cause the condition. Russell-Silver syndrome has been linked to a genetic change in chromosomes 7 or 11 in about 60% of people with the condition.

Russell-Silver syndrome (RSS) is a rare disorder characterized by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), poor growth after birth, a relatively large head size, a triangular facial appearance, a prominent forehead (looking from the side of the face), body asymmetry and significant feeding difficulties.

Silver–Russell syndrome occurs in approximately one out of every 50,000 to 100,000 births. Males and females seem to be affected with equal frequency.

Differential diagnosis includes intrauterine growth retardation due to impaired placental function, structural or mosaic chromosomal abnormalities, neonatal progeria (Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome), 3M syndrome and Mulibrey dwarfism (see these terms).
