Risk Group 1 organisms do not cause disease in healthy adult humans. Risk Group 2 organisms can cause disease in humans, but the disease is treatable or preventable. Risk Group 3 organisms cause serious disease in humans. Treatments and vaccines for these diseases may exist.

Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) BSL-1 labs are used to study infectious agents or toxins not known to consistently cause disease in healthy adult humans or animals. Workers follow basic safety procedures, called standard microbial practices, and require no special equipment or design features.

The four biosafety levels are BSL-1, BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4, with BSL-4 being the highest (maximum) level of containment. There are additional specific rules and designations for animal research (ABSL), agricultural research (BSL-Ag), and other types of research.

Human blood, blood components, fluids, unfixed organs, tissues and cell lines (primary and established) Non-Human Primate Derived Materials (including established cell lines) Biotoxins (with and LD 50 of less than 100 micrograms per kilogram of body weight in vertebrates) requiring BSL-2 containment.

Biohazard Level 4 usually includes dangerous viruses like Ebola, Marburg virus, Lassa fever, Bolivian hemorrhagic fever, and many other hemorrhagic viruses found in the tropics.

In addition to BSL-3 considerations, BSL-4 laboratories have the following containment requirements: Personnel are required to change clothing before entering, shower upon exiting. Decontamination of all materials before exiting.

BSL-1 is designated for those working with microbes that don't cause disease in healthy humans, for example, non-pathogenic E. coli. BSL-2 is for labs that work with pathogens including organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus or Vibrio cholerae.
